FerryForecast is a small independent project. If you know Nantucket, have ferry data we don’t, or just have a good idea — we want to hear from you.

Help with data

The model is trained on weather data and cancellation records. Better data means better predictions. Right now, the biggest gaps are:

  • —SSA per-trip logs — a public records request is pending. If you work at SSA or have access to historical trip-level data, we would love to hear from you.
  • —Hy-Line pre-2023 alerts — Hy-Line did not publish structured cancellation data before mid-2023. If you archived their Facebook alerts from that period, that data would materially improve the model.
  • —Local weather observations — NOAA Buoy 44020 is the primary source, but on-island observations or captain experience with specific wind/swell conditions would help calibrate edge cases.

This project started because ferry cancellations are genuinely disruptive to island life — and the information to predict them exists but has never been assembled. If you know of other civic or logistical problems on Nantucket that a technology project could help solve, we want to hear about them.

Prediction data is available as a JSON API at /api/prediction. Supports ?date=YYYY-MM-DD. An LLM-readable description is at /llms.txt.
